The first hour of a child’s life can shape the years that follow.
Initiating breastfeeding within the first hour after birth provides a newborn with colostrum often described as the baby’s first vaccine, while strengthening immunity, reducing the risk of infection and improving the chances of survival. WHO and UNICEF recommend breastfeeding within the first hour, exclusive breastfeeding for six months, and continued breastfeeding alongside appropriate complementary feeding for up to two years or beyond.
The need for action in Pakistan remains urgent. More than 700 newborn babies die every day, while about 10 million Pakistani children experience stunting. Only around 48% of children are exclusively breastfed during their first six months. In Punjab, exclusive breastfeeding remains a critical challenge, with only around 44% of infants under six months exclusively breastfed, the lowest rate among Pakistan’s provinces according to the National Nutrition Survey. These figures remind us that breastfeeding is not merely a personal choice, it is a national public-health priority requiring supportive families, skilled health workers, enabling workplace, and responsive health systems.
As part of World Breastfeeding Week 2026, and in collaboration with our valued partner UNICEF Pakistan, ACT International stands behind the theme:
“Breastfeeding for a Sustainable Start in Life: Strengthen What Works.”
Through the Benazir Nashonuma Programme, our teams provide nutrition counselling and breastfeeding awareness through Facilitation Centres across Lahore and Sahiwal Divisions, reaching more than 175,000 pregnant and lactating women and children.
We must ensure that every mother receives accurate information, respectful counselling, and practical support immediately after childbirth. Fathers, families, communities, healthcare providers, employers, and policymakers all have a role in creating an environment in which mothers can breastfeed safely and confidently.
Let us protect the first hour, support the first six months and give every child a healthier and more sustainable start in life.
