Community Support
In the aftermath of the devastating 2022 flood that ravaged Abdul Hayee Khosa, a rural village heavily reliant on agricultural farming, the community faced unprecedented challenges. Even before the flooding, the village faced water scarcity and were only able to yield one crop in a year due to the inflow of water from the canals. In 2023, an assessment and registration team from ACT visited Abdul Hayee Khosa to evaluate the village's needs and formulate a plan for rehabilitation. The village was suffering from water shortage as the ponds had dried up and the stored waters of ponds had been used. The existing water pond, a vital resource for the community, required immediate attention and expansion to facilitate the village's evolving needs. Post-registration, a crucial meeting was convened between the ACT Team and community members to identify a scheme that would offer maximum benefit. The community recognized the urgency of addressing water-related challenges and collectively agreed that rehabilitating and expanding the water pond would be paramount. The initiative aimed not only to restore the pond but also to increase its area, ensuring a sustainable water source for household activities and mitigating the impact of water shortage in future. ACT swiftly initiated the rehabilitation project, focusing on increasing the water pond's area to better meet the community's water requirements. The project involved dredging, desilting, and reinforcing the pond's infrastructure to enhance its capacity along with space for plantation along the sides of the pond to improve the ecosystem, environment and air quality. The goal was not only to restore the water pond but to transform it into a resilient and integral resource for the village. The community actively participated in the project, showcasing unwavering enthusiasm. Their involvement extended beyond labor, as community members contributed their insights, experiences, and local knowledge, enriching the project with a deep understanding of the village's unique needs. Upon completion of the water pond rehabilitation, Abdul Hayee Khosa experienced a transformative change. The increased water pond area not only met the immediate needs of the community but also provided a buffer against future water scarcity as ponds of the area had no water each year for two months of June and July. The rehabilitation of Abdul Hayee Khosa's water pond stands as a testament to the impactful intersection of community engagement and strategic planning. The project not only addressed the immediate water needs but also contributed to the broader goal of rebuilding the village's resilience after the catastrophic flood of 2022.
